We've finally got snow and it is just in time for the big holiday weekend. It began snowing yesterday afternoon and continued off and on since then. We have been transformed into the beautiful "Winter Wonderland" that we are so use to this time of year. We have gotten 4-9 inches of snow, depending where you are, with more expected.

The skiing will be terrific with this mix of new snow, the cross country skiers and snowshoers will finally be able to enjoy and the snowmobilers will be in their glory.

Truly the beginning of the holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving! And yes...we have much to be thankful for. Take a moment to reflect, enjoy your families and friends and don't eat too much. Also, safe travels to all of those on the roads and in the air.

The ski resorts are trying to make snow, but it has been an unseasonably warm fall for us here at Trout Creek and in the North. The forecast is to have warmer weather yet this weekend and then the cold is to begin. We should be skiing soon. The winter weather prediction, from all those who pretend to know, is cold and lots of snow. That is our plan!

Shopping for the holidays begins in earnest this weekend. If you haven't already made some plans for the week after Christmas please consider Trout Creek as your destination. Numerous families come up to enjoy some part of the winter season with us whether it is downhill skiing or boarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, snowmobiling, etc. Maybe Trout Creek could become part of your Holiday tradition.

Fall is winding down quickly, school is back in session, and the holidays are approaching quicker than we realize. All of this means that it is time to start dreaming about and planning your next vacation.

If you are planning a winter getaway, Trout Creek is right next to Nubs Nob and across from Boyne Highlands which are great Northern Michigan and Midwest ski destinations. Ride the FREE Shuttle to and from Nubs on winter weekends! How convenient!

Wow! I'm not sure where July and August went - they are kind of a blur. I know that we were super busy and it was great to see our regular guests return with their families as they do each summer. Of course it was wonderful to see new faces as well.

Even though the kids are back to school and we are looking forward to autumn, we still have great weather to get out and enjoy a round of golf and/or a weekend getaway. It's much quieter than it is in the summer and the pace seems to slow even more, but the beauty is all around us. Therer is nothing like a northern Michigan fall sunset.

As fall approaches, we look forward to the beautiful colors that we are so accustomed to here. A trip up M-119 through the "Tunnel of Trees" is an absolute must. The colors will be magnificient way up on the bluffs overlooking Little Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan. A couple of stops along the way include the Good Hart General Store and historic Legs Inn.

Regatta Weekend!

This weekend is Sidewalk Sales, Ugotta Regatta and it is even National Cheesecake Day! There is still plenty of summer left...don't let it get away without visiting us!

It has been a warm July but not brutal like the rest of the country! Come to northern Michigan to enjoy the breeze from Lake Michigan and the many lakes, rivers and streams in this area.

Summer Begins!

It's not too late to make plans to celebrate the 4th in the North! Trout Creek still has a few openings and we would love to have you come and stay with us while joining in the fun-filled holiday. The Petoskey/Harbor Springs area is known for the terrific celebrations held this weekend. There will be of course parades, fireworks over Little Traverse Bay, art shows and antique fair.

On Tuesday of this week, the Trout Creek staff enjoyed a private tour of the new Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen. The building is beautifully renovated and the tour was lots of fun. The tours are free to the public Monday through Friday, but we suggest that you call ahead to make arrangements. On the tour you will get to see how candy is made and then how it is coated using a "chocolate waterfall" At the end of the tour, there are yummy samples to enjoy!

A Big Welcome to Springtime!

We have been waiting for spring and it came fast and furious. It seems like all of the foliage popped out this week with just the right amount of rain and temperatures in the high 80's. It's funny, watching the evolution of spring through the flowers. I know exactly where we are in the spring by which flowers are in bloom. First the crocus sprout, then the daffodils, then my magnolia tree in the front yard, then the trillium, the tulips, my flowering crab tree and white flowering almond and now the lilacs are making their presence known. Soon the whole cast of summer blooms will appear. Ah yes...it is a beautiful time of year in northern Michigan!

As you make your plans to visit our area this summer, be sure to put a visit to the NEW Kilwin's Chocolate Kitchen on your list. Kilwin's bought the old Olseson's Food Store and have transformed it into something that cannot even be described - you've got to fit this tour into your schedule. The tour will show you how candy is made and coated using a "chocolate waterfall". At the end of the tour you'll be able to enjoy some wonderful samples.

Also new to the area are a couple of restaurants that we have heard great things about including: the Twisted Olive, a Mediterranean menu serving breakfast and lunch and also The Palette Bistro which opens at 4pm each day and also serves a Mediterranean cuisine.

Signs of Spring

The signs of spring are certainly presenting themselves now. The trillium are out in full force and they are beautiful! I don't think that there is a more beautiful flower.

Our first fish delivery for our fishing ponds occurred this week. The ponds are filled with 600 trout and bluegill.

The first 2 of our Big Fore Golf groups arrived this week and had superb experiences. There are 7 more groups coming in next week. Yeah golf season!!

There are still some condos available if you are thinking about riding in the Zoo-de-Mack Bike Ride. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous and perfect for biking.

Also don't forget the 8th Annual Memorial Bridge Run on May 28th. A very cool opportunity.

I made my first visit to the Argonne Supper Club over the weekend. Their whitefish from the John Cross Fisheries is absolutely the best I have ever had!

Mushroom Hunting in May

There are many things that I love about Northern Michigan. Two of my favorite things about the North are the water and the woods. This past weekend I spent Sunday afternoon out in the woods morel mushroom hunting. Now, I'm not a very good mushroom hunter, but I love trying and especially being outdoors.

I went with my boss and her extended family. I know...who spends time with their boss on the weekend? Actually, her and her family are lots of fun. There are some mushroomers in the group that I could learn a few things from. They have a picnic in the woods which is the real reason that I go, as I don't even eat mushrooms! I think that we were a few days early as we didn't really hit the jackpot: Debby, the Boss, and I only found a couple each. Her husband and son did find one great spot that had about 50! But now the temperatures are warming up and we're getting a little rain. The mushroom hunting should be perfect for this weekend's National Mushroom Festival in Boyne City.

The gas prices are inching down and hopefully, the predictions that the spike is over are correct. As families gather to celebrate the beginning of summer over Memorial Day, don't forget to make your summer plans to visit us!

The signs of spring are finally appearing. It's beginning to get warmer, the trees are budding, the birds are chirping and we are seeing the daffodils. Morel mushrooms are being found and the Trillium should be making their appearance any time.

Snow??

OK...the weatherman predicted it all week, but up here we do not live by the predictions of the weather people or make our plans accordingly. But, this time they were right! On Wednesday morning I awake to 8 or 9 inches of snow in my yard. It was beautiful, I have to admit but it is the end of April! I just came home from vacationing and playing golf in Florida. I am ready to be in the summer golf, boating, swimming mode!

BUT, have you ever just wanted to "DO NOTHING" for a couple of days? Maybe you didn't get Spring Break this year, or maybe you just need a little getaway. Well, here's your chance! Most of the year it is beautiful outside with all kinds of things to do. But in April, the weather is unpredictable, the pools are closed until late May, the fish ponds haven't even been stocked. It is a great time though to do nothing for a couple of days.

Bring a book, sit by the fireplace, go for a walk on one of our trails, watch free movies or go out for a nice dinner with no crowds. Best of all, we'll give you a great deal on a beautiful, cozy condo.

Our beautiful fall has wound down. We have been so lucky to have had such great color and unseasonably warm temperatures this fall. I'm sure that we will get a few nice days yet to get in that last round of golf, finish the yard work, etc. but for the most part, the first three seasons of the year are over. It has been a terrific year weather wise.

As the seasons change, our mantra changes to "Think Snow". And as I type this, it has begun to Snow! Is that the power of positive thinking? Our next big season is Ski Season. Being right next to Nubs Nob and across from Boyne Highlands, our focus now changes to making our winter season the best ever.

It's definitely time to get serious about making plans for a holiday or winter ski vacation. All predictions are that it will be a great winter with lots of snow. Check out our website and give us a call to plan that winter getaway!

A Beautiful Fall Golf Outing

Having gone all summer watching golfers come and go, it was time for me to hit the links. My brother treated me to an afternoon on the course during one of the most beautiful times of the year in Northern Michigan - the fall :o)

My son, Harvey, and I suited up and headed out on a warm and sunny Monday afternoon. We had the course to ourselves, enjoying gorgeous views of the surrounding fall colors. Wildlife was abound with whole flocks of geese resting on the water hazards sprinkled throughout the course. Squirrels and chipmunks were preparing for a long winter, stowing away any morsels that they could find for a mid-winter feast. It was clear to see that the whole of nature was in a transitional period from one season to the next.

I'm afraid that my golf game leaves something to be desired. I think I may have lost half or more of my brothers golf balls either in the woods, a bush or two, or the leaf piles that were starting to show up along the edge of the fairway. Despite this, fun was had by all. My short game is halfway decent, but I definitely need to work on my long game. Another project for next summer!

If you haven't made the annual pilgrimage north to golf or just to visit the Harbor Springs Area, now is the perfect time. The fall colors are reaching their peak and create the perfect surrounding for a quiet getaway. - Dan -

Fall Events and Specials

It is starting to look pretty up here! The colors are building. I am thinking that in about a week or so we will be near peak color. A drive through the famous Tunnel of Trees will be on the agenda for sure. The crowds, the lines and traffic have disappeared. It is perfectly sunny today and 60 degrees. Perfect for golf, bike riding and hiking!

This weekend is the newly created bike race, The Crybaby Classic Mountain Bike Race. This race is sponsored by the Bay Area Tennis Club along with Nubs Nob and many area businesses including Trout Creek. The race will be run on Nubs' Nordic trails and there is a purse of $8000! Trout Creek is offering a special one or two night package to go along with the race.

Next weekend...October 8-10 is our semi-annual Scrapbook Retreat, the Harbor Springs 1/2 Marathon and the Charlevoix Apple Festival. You can check it all out on our website!

Personally, I am hoping this weekend includes a round of golf on one of our spectacular courses, a visit to Boyne city's annual Harvest Festival (one of the best I have seen) and a hike at Dead Man's Hill with lunch to follow.

It is beautiful today! People are swimming and relaxing by our pools, riding bikes and just loving life in northern Michigan. We have had the most beautiful summer...great temperatures and lots of sunshine. Even today when it looked like it was going to rain all day...it turned around this afternoon and the sun came out. Going on a bike ride tonight!

Boating Fun on the Inland Waterway today

We hope your fathers day was great! Ours was...we went boating on Crooked Lake and up the Crooked River. It was beautiful outside, the water was chilly but felt refreshing. Boating on the Inland Waterway is my favorite summertime activity. If you are a boater...I would suggest that you call us to book your vacation and ask me all about boating adventures. If you are not bringing a boat with you...rent one at the Windjammer Marina. They have ski boats, jet skis, pontoon boats and even a cool boat with a water slide!

Pack a cooler with lunch and snacks and plenty of refreshments. Park the boat at the docks by Spankys, up the river, and walk a block into Alanson to the Mackinac Island Fudge and Creamery! Yummy!

Tonight my husband and I took part in the Ride of Silence in Harbor Springs. If you are not familiar with the Ride of Silence, it is a worldwide silent bike ride that is held each year to honor those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. Hundreds of countries on all 7 continents have groups that take part in this ride. It started tonight in North America at 7pm and will then roll across the globe.

It was absolutely the most perfect weather tonight...in the 70's and not a cloud in the sky! Everyone met at the waterfront in Harbor Springs and then we rode 8 miles in silence as a group through town. It was a great experience and we were so happy to take part in this community event.

The ride is to also bring awareness that we all need to share the road. So...please pay careful attention to the road when you are driving...bikers have rights too! Lets all be careful to avoid injuries or worse.

After this awesome ride...we ate dinner at Turkeys. We love it there! It is just such a cozy little spot...real small town, comfortable. Great food...I had the Tuna Tomato Salad...yum!

It was a great night in Harbor Springs!

I recently had the afternoon off on another gorgeous, sunny day in Northern Michigan. I took the opportunity to check out the trail system, available to any guest right here at Trout Creek.

I started at the very top of our property on a mountain bike, trekking deep into the woods on our well kept backwoods trails. This trail connects with the state two tracks that run all over the county and serve as snowmobile trails in the winter.

I dismounted and headed further into the brush, looking to find where our trails connect with the No rt h Country Trail system. This trail runs from Washington state to Maine. We are fortunate to be right on the route to this system that is kept up by local volunteers at the Harbor Springs Chapter of NCT members.

Spring Has Sprung in Northern Michigan

At Trout Creek, it is not often that we can enjoy a sunny, 70 degree day in early April. This blog finds us longing to be outside
and enjoy the sunshine. The snow has all melted and the ski hills are enjoying their final spring days before closing for the season. I'm torn about going skiing this weekend or going boating - two options that are usually mutually exclusive.

The golf courses are opening and the green grass is beginning to show across Northern Michigan. This ought to be one of our best and most beautiful summers to date if the last few gorgeous days are any indication.

Last week, my son Harvey and I had the good fortune of going to Lake O'Neill on the south end of Wilderness State Park, only 25 minutes away from Trout Creek Condominium Resort. The snow had just melted after only several days of rain that brought on an early spring thaw. Pictured here are some of the sights of that trip.

Many Trout Creek staff members have been out hunting for the elusive delicacy of Morel Mushrooms and have reported that it is a good year so far. We have found many of the white & black Morels! The season will continue for a bit so come on up to Trout Creek and give it a go.

A new Memorial Weekend Package has just been announced - The Patriot's Package! It includes a lodging discount & a $25 Glens Gift Card so that you can pick up groceries for a fun picnic. Ask us about discounted golf at Chestnut Valley too! We're hoping to see some veterans and their families who will participate in some of the area Memorial Day services and celebrations. The celebrations in our area are small town America at its best. Let us not forget the real reason for this special day.

For those of us who live in beautiful Northern Michigan we know all too well that Memorial Day Weekend is also the kick-off to our summer season and all that it has to offer. Come and join in the fun!

Welcome to Spring

The Scrapbook Weekend Retreat last weekend was terrific. The 23 participants had a great time working on their projects, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones, enjoying being away from home, eating the great meals and snacks, and staying up until all hours of the night. We are already making plans for our Fall Scrapbook Retreat which will be the weekend of October 24.

The weather is feeling much more like spring lately and everything is starting to green up. The golf courses are open and reporting that the courses are in great shape for this early spring. Give a call to book your golf getaway fro this season. The spring rates are super if you can plan a getaway for the near future.

Also, with the weather that we are experiencing, the mushrooms should be popping out anytime now. Come on up for the National Mushroom Festival in Boyne City the weekend of May 14-17. We’ll give you some ideas on where to hunt for the mushrooms but we’ll never tell our secret spots.

For those of you who remember Mindy: She has recently moved to Savanna, Georgia. She tells us that it is absolutely beautiful there but of course, she misses Northern Michigan.

Congrats to MSU Spartans!

Congratulations to the Michigan State Spartans! Once again they are going to the "Big Dance", as they have reached the Finals of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Tonight's National Championship game at Ford Field in the Motor City pits them against the odds on favorite, the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Michiganians will come together tonight and root for the Spartans. It doesn't matter if you are a Spartan, a Wolverine, a Chippewa, a Bronco, etc. On this night, we are all one, rooting for our State team, the Spartans. They are the underdogs and they will need us all pulling together for a common goal which Midwesterners do so well. Tonight the Spartans will have the home court and 6th man advantage. Hopefully, each team member will bring their "A" game, and we know that Tom Izzo, a Michigan product of our own, will have a great game plan for the team to implement. It will be a late night tonight but hopefully by tomorrow morning the Michigan State Spartans will have cut down the nets at Ford Field in Detroit and will have been crowned National Champs!

March Skiing is Thee Best!

Overnight it snowed 12-16 inches! It was unexpected and fell so quickly...it is beautiful! After traipsing around Trout Creek this morning with the camera to try to capture just how beautiful and fluffy this snow is, I decided that I had to take a few hours to ski next door at Nubs Nob. What a great decision...awesome snow...brilliant blue skies...happy people skiing everywhere!

Golf Show, Spring Skiing & Baby Update

The Michigan Golf Show is at the Rock Financial Center in Novi this weekend, starting Friday, March 6th. If you are looking for something to do, it is quite a showcase for golfers. Make sure that you look for Chris, our Big Fore Golf specialist at the Dunmaglas Booth!

You might not have snow south of us, but we still have plenty! The temperatures have been cold and the ski and snowboarding conditions are terrific. The season is not over yet. I skied just a few days ago and it was awesome. The snow was nice and soft under my skis...the sun was shining...it does not get better than that!

Looking a bit ahead, Chestnut Valley will be hosting a Poker Run on February 21st. They'll host a fun party afterwards and of course Trout Creek is a sponsoring partner. Snowmobile between several area restaurants to play a game of poker, end up at Chestnut Valley, enjoy great food and prizes!

Also on the weekend of the 21st, the underwater viewing of the 11 foot Italian Marble crucifix at the Petoskey waterfront will be taking place. This opportunity takes place every February...ice permitting.

An update on our expecting co-workers/friends: Rachel has a new son, Tom, who arrived a few days ago. We are still waiting for Nikki's daughter to arrive.

We did see the first sign of spring this week at Trout Creek. Chris saw a Robin at the indoor/outdoor pool! She thinks that it was very lost. It reminded us that it is not too early to start making your plans for a golf trip. What a great weekend it was! The sun was shining and the weather was fantastic here for all of the winter sports enthusiasts. There was just enough new snow to keep it white and beautiful.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers on their sixth Super Bowl Championship! Everyone had a super time at the Super Bowl Party hosted by Chestnut Valley Golf Course and partnered by Trout Creek. Congrats to Mrs. Jones who won the free 2 night stay with us and to Jim Mayham for winning the 50" big screen TV! Next year come join in the fun!

There's a ton of snow Up North!

January is winding up and it is truly a winter wonderland up here. The amount of snow that we have is unbelievable. We've had 105 inches this season. All of the winter sports enthusiasts are happy this winter. The skiers, the snowmobilers, the snowshoers, the ice fishermen, the sledders and the skaters have all had great weather to do their thing. And it looks like they are all going to have plenty of more winter to enjoy their favorite sports. I am counting on at least 2 more months of winter and great snow.

A New Era

On Tuesday, January 20th, the entire Trout Creek staff enjoyed pizza and brownies together while we watched the Inauguration and the Inaugural Address of our new President Barack Obama. The housekeepers, the maintenance crew and the office staff put aside their political differences and beliefs to acknowledge this new era for our great country. We all share in the hope that our nation will turn itself around in years to come!

Scrapbooking Retreat

This past weekend Trout Creek hosted its 7th semi-annual Scrapbooking Retreat. Everyone had a great time as usual. They ate great food, enjoyed a massage, shared ideas and finished many pages. Prizes were awarded all weekend long with the big prize winners being Jennifer Bell who won a free weekend for the April 2009 Scrapbooking Retreat and Bobbie Schroeder who won a huge basket filled with scrapbooking materials from Scrapper's Attic of Petoskey! Trout Creek is Going Green!

We have begun the process of achieving certification as a Green Lodging Michigan property. The volunteer program is aimed at environmental conservation and encourages lodging facilities to implement environmental initiatives and cost-saving green practices to conserve energy, reduce water consumption, protect air quality and reduce waste. Green Lodges helps protect the environment. This in turn helps make Trout Creek and Michigan a great travel destination! We started a recycling program almost one year ago and it has been very popular. We will keep you posted!
